Pitru Paksha, also known as Shraddha Paksha, is a deeply spiritual time in the Hindu lunar calendar dedicated to honoring ancestors.

These 16 days are considered essential for clearing Pitru Rin (ancestral karmic debts) and ensuring peace for souls who have passed away, while also bringing blessings of prosperity, harmony, and protection to the family.

In 2025, Pitru Paksha will begin on Sunday, September 7 (Purnima Shraddha) and continue until Sunday, September 21 (Sarva Pitru Amavasya).

The last day of the period is especially significant because it allows families to perform Shraddha for all their ancestors at once.

Throughout this time, families perform rituals like “Shraddha, Tarpan, and Pind Daan”, along with acts of charity and remembering ancestors.

However, certain activities are avoided to preserve spiritual purity.

Dos During Pitru Paksha

Perform Shraddha and Tarpan

Offer food, water, and prayers to ancestors on the correct lunar day (tithi). Even a simple Tarpan with water and sesame seeds, done with full devotion, is believed to be very powerful.

Feed Brahmins, Cows, Birds, and the Needy

Giving food to Brahmins, cows, crows, dogs and people in need is thought to reach ancestors and bring prosperity.

Observe a Pure and Sattvic Lifestyle

Eat vegetarian meals, stay clean, and practice self-control. Recite mantras like the “Gayatri Mantra” or “Mahamrityunjaya Mantra” for peace and spiritual growth.

    Donate in Memory of Ancestors

Giving food, clothes, or charity (dakshina) is believed to reduce karmic debts and bring positive energy.

Respect Elders and Maintain Family Unity

Avoid arguments and keep the home peaceful. Respect for parents and elders is considered a form of Shraddha.

    Don’ts During Pitru Paksha

Avoid Starting New Ventures or Celebrations

Weddings, engagements, housewarmings, and new investments should be postponed until after Pitru Paksha.

Do Not Consume Non-Vegetarian Food or Alcohol

Meat, eggs, alcohol, and even onions and garlic are discouraged as they decrease spiritual energy.

Refrain from Cutting Hair, Nails, or Buying New Items

Cutting hair, shaving, or buying new clothes and property are considered inauspicious.

      Don’t Ignore Daily Ancestor Remembrance

If full rituals are not possible, offer “jal tarpan” (water with sesame seeds) facing south while remembering your ancestors.

      Avoid Anger, Conflicts, and Negativity

Harsh words and arguments are believed to block blessings. Stay calm, humble, and devoted throughout the fortnight.

Pitru Paksha is not just about rituals; it is a time to “express gratitude, humility, and remembrance”.

By performing Shraddha with sincerity, feeding the poor, and leading a disciplined life, families ensure peace for their ancestors’ souls and invite blessings of prosperity and protection for themselves.

This sacred period serves as a reminder of the strong bond between generations, encouraging us to honor the legacy left behind and live with respect for our roots.
