Bhai Phota is a significant Hindu festival celebrated in West Bengal, and is observed on the second day (Dwitiya tithi) after Kali Puja (Diwali). This festival cherishes and reinforces the bond of love and affection between brothers and sisters, and is celebrated with much enthusiasm and joy. Both brothers and sisters eagerly await the arrival of Bhai Phota, a time to celebrate their unique connection.
This Year Bhai Phota will be celebrated on 3rd November 2024 (Sunday).
Bhai Phota Ceremonies
At around 10 a.m., Bengali households resonate with the sound of conch shells, marking the beginning of Bhai Phota festivities. Traditionally, the ceremonies take place at the sister’s home, where she invites her brother and his family for the occasion. As the family gathers in the central part of the house, the sister, dressed in her finest attire, invites her brother to sit on a small cotton mat or “Asana.”
The Ritual of Bhai Phota
With sincerity and devotion, the sister applies the “Phota” or “Tilak” on her brother’s forehead, accompanied by the chanting of mantras. The “Tilak” is made by mixing sandalwood (chandan), kajal, and yogurt (doi). The application method varies: an elder sister uses the little finger of her left hand, while a younger sister uses her right hand.
After the Phota ritual, the sister treats her brother to sweets and gifts. Following tradition, the brother then touches his elder sister’s feet, receiving her blessings of rice grains and Durba (blades of grass). It is also customary for the brother to reciprocate with gifts or cash for his sister.
Though Bhai Phota ceremonies are simple, they hold profound meaning. The ritual symbolizes the sister’s prayers to the divine for her brother’s long and prosperous life. In a mark of love and dedication, the sister refrains from eating or drinking anything, even morning tea, before applying Phota to her beloved brother.
Bhai Phota, also known as Bhai Dooj in other parts of India. The celebration, though simple, is filled with deep meaning, and represents the care and devotion siblings share. Bhai Phota not only strengthens family bonds but also celebrates the unique connection between siblings in Bengali culture.
