In a high-scoring encounter between Kolkata Knight Riders (KKR) and Rajasthan Royals (RR), RR emerged victorious in a thrilling run chase. Jos Buttler played a pivotal role in RR’s comeback, scoring a magnificent century to help his team equal their own record for the highest successful chase in IPL history, chasing down a target of 224.
KKR started slowly but picked up the pace later in the innings. Sunil Narine, known for his bowling prowess, surprised everyone with his maiden century in the IPL. Notably, he became the first player in IPL history to score a century and also take a five-wicket haul. Narine received valuable support from Rinku Singh towards the end, enabling KKR to surpass the 220-run mark. RR did manage to slightly restrict the run flow in the death overs, but KKR had set a massive target of 224 runs for RR to chase.
Despite the daunting target, RR showcased their batting strength from the beginning, scoring at a rapid rate during the video game-like powerplay and maintaining a run rate close to 12 even after the field restrictions were lifted. They displayed excellent decision-making in choosing which bowlers to attack and which to handle cautiously, notably showing respect towards Sunil Narine. However, RR suffered a collapse after losing wickets in quick succession, and their run rate slowed down following the dismissal of Riyan Parag. At this point, RR’s chances seemed bleak with a requirement for several runs and limited aggressive play.
Buttler, however, displayed resilience, adapting quickly to the situation. After playing cautiously initially, he shifted gears when the match seemed to be slipping away from RR. Rovman Powell provided crucial support to Buttler and played fearlessly, particularly against Narine, who had proven difficult to score boundaries against for other RR batsmen. Powell’s contribution was inspiring. Despite his dismissal, it appeared that the tide had turned in KKR’s favor. However, Buttler unleashed his blitzkrieg in the last three overs, dismantling the KKR bowlers and guiding his team to victory. This remarkable century by Buttler undid the century Sunil Narine smashed for KKR, reminiscent of how another one of his century undid the century Kohli smashed for RCB against his team.
