Chandranath Rath — personal assistant to BJP Leader of Opposition Suvendu Adhikari — was shot dead late Wednesday in Madhyamgram, North 24 Parganas.

West Bengal woke to grim news on the morning of May 7, 2026. Chandranath Rath, the 41-year-old personal assistant and closest aide to BJP’s Leader of Opposition Suvendu Adhikari, was shot dead the previous night in Madhyamgram — less than 200 metres from his own residence. The killing has unleashed a political storm across the state, with the BJP calling it a “cold-blooded, pre-planned assassination” and demanding immediate accountability from the state government.

The incident occurred just 48 hours after the Trinamool Congress suffered a sweeping electoral defeat at the hands of the BJP in the West Bengal Assembly elections, whose results were declared on May 4.

A Life That Began in Discipline

Chandranath Rath was born and raised in Chandipur, a modest village in Purba Medinipur district. His formative years were shaped by the Rahara Ramakrishna Mission, where he completed his schooling — an institution known for instilling rigour and spiritual discipline in equal measure. Those close to the family say he had, at one point, considered walking the path of a monk before choosing a life of national service.

He went on to serve in the Indian Air Force for nearly two decades — a career that earned him a reputation for precision, loyalty, and an almost monastic work ethic. After opting for voluntary retirement, he briefly entered the corporate world before gravitating toward political administration.

“Soft-spoken, disciplined, rarely in the spotlight — yet deeply involved in every major political operation.”

The Political Operator Behind the Curtain

Around 2019, Rath formally joined Suvendu Adhikari’s team at a pivotal moment — when Adhikari was still a minister in Mamata Banerjee’s Trinamool Congress government. When Adhikari made his dramatic switch to the BJP in 2020, Rath followed without hesitation, cementing his loyalty as something far deeper than professional alignment.

Within Bengal BJP circles, Rath was referred to simply as Adhikari’s “shadow man.” He managed campaign logistics, political coordination, communication with grassroots cadres, and sensitive internal operations — all with a quiet authority that rarely drew public attention. He was, in every meaningful sense, the machinery behind the machine.

The Night of the Attack

On Wednesday, May 6, Rath had spent the day in his native Chandipur following the BJP’s massive electoral victory. He reportedly met local party workers and urged restraint: “Dada has requested you all to stay calm and not indulge in any violence,” he told cadres who were celebrating in the aftermath of election results.

Later that night, he was returning to his Madhyamgram residence when the attack unfolded with calculated precision. His vehicle was only 200 metres from home when a suspicious car — reportedly bearing a Siliguri registration number (WB 74) — intercepted his Scorpio, slowing it down. Almost immediately, motorcycle-borne assailants, reportedly at least eight individuals riding four motorcycles, surrounded the vehicle and opened fire at point-blank range through the car window. All the attackers wore helmets, making identification difficult.

Rath was rushed to a nearby private hospital, where he was declared dead. He had sustained multiple bullet wounds.

Political Fallout and Investigations

News of the killing spread rapidly, triggering panic across Madhyamgram. Senior BJP leaders — including Sukanta Majumdar, Arjun Singh, and party vice-president Raju Banerjee — rushed to the hospital. Suvendu Adhikari himself arrived shortly after midnight under heavy security.

Adhikari called the killing “cold-blooded murder” and alleged that Rath had been deliberately targeted. Rajya Sabha MP Rahul Sinha went further, claiming it was part of a larger conspiracy aimed at Adhikari himself. West Bengal’s Director General of Police confirmed that CCTV footage from the area is being examined and that investigators believe the attack was carefully orchestrated in advance.

The BJP has launched sharp attacks on the ruling TMC, accusing it of orchestrating the killing amid post-poll violence. The TMC is yet to formally respond to the specific allegations.

The killing of Chandranath Rath has cast a long shadow over Bengal’s post-election moment — and raised urgent questions about the safety of political workers in a state where victory at the ballot box has rarely meant peace on the ground.
