In a landmark interim ruling, Justice Jyoti Singh restrains widow Priya Kapur from dealing with properties, company shares, bank accounts, and crypto wallets — placing the burden of proof squarely on her to clear suspicions over a disputed ₹30,000 crore will.
Advocate’s Statement · Ravi Sharma, Counsel for Karisma Kapoor
“The court today has granted an injunction in favour of Karisma’s children, whereby it has injuncted Priya Kapur from dealing in any manner with the immovable assets of Sunjay Kapur. The Court has specifically said that Priya Kapur cannot deal with any of the immovable properties, companies, shares, bank accounts and crypto wallets of Sunjay Kapur… Priya has the obligation to dispel the suspicious circumstances which were cited and which seem reasonable as pleaded by Karisma’s children.”
— Adv. Ravi Sharma, outside Delhi High Court, April 30, 2026
The Delhi High Court handed a sweeping interim victory to Samaira Kapur and Kiaan Raj Kapur — the children of late industrialist Sunjay Kapur and Bollywood actress Karisma Kapoor — on Thursday, restraining their stepmother Priya Sachdev Kapur from dissipating or creating any third-party rights over the multibillion-rupee estate their father left behind. The ruling by Justice Jyoti Singh marks a decisive early moment in what is shaping up to be one of India’s most high-profile inheritance battles in recent memory.
At the heart of the dispute is a will dated March 21, 2025 — just weeks before Sunjay Kapur’s sudden death — which purportedly bequeaths his entire personal estate to Priya Kapur, his third wife, effectively cutting out his children from his earlier marriage. The children, represented by senior counsel, including Adv. Mahesh Jethmalani has called the will forged and a product of a criminal conspiracy. The court, while reserving its final word on authenticity for trial, has chosen to protect the estate in the interim, finding that suspicious circumstances are real and reasonable.
Who Is Sunjay Kapur?
Sunjay Kapur was no ordinary industrialist. Born on October 15, 1971, into the prominent Kapur business family, he rose to become chairman of Sona Comstar — a global automotive component manufacturer with nine factories spanning India, China, Mexico, Serbia, and the United States. He also served as chairperson of the Automotive Component Manufacturers Association (ACMA) and was a close personal friend of Prince William. His estate, at the time of his death, was estimated at approximately ₹30,000 crore.
He was married three times. His first marriage to fashion designer Nandita Mahtani in 1996 ended in divorce in 2000. In 2003, he married Bollywood actress Karisma Kapoor. The couple had two children — daughter Samaira, born in 2005, and son Kiaan Raj, born in 2010 — before officially separating in 2016 after a prolonged legal battle. In 2017, he married Priya Sachdev, with whom he had a son, Azarius. On June 12, 2025, Sunjay Kapur collapsed during a polo match in England and died at the age of 53 — reportedly after suffering a heart attack following a bee sting during the match.

Supporting Plaintiff / Witness
Rani Kapur
Sunjay’s mother, who has also raised doubts over the will’s validity, lending weight to the children’s challenge in court.
The court made clear that its interim order does not amount to a finding on the will’s authenticity — that remains a matter for a full trial. However, the ruling places the onus firmly on Priya Kapur to remove the suspicions raised, rather than on the children to prove fraud. Justice Singh explicitly observed that a prima facie case was made out in favour of the plaintiffs, making preservation of the estate a legal necessity pending the outcome. Separately, in a connected defamation matter, the court has also directed both Priya Kapur and Sunjay’s sister Mandhira Kapur Smith to refrain from making public statements against each other.
The case has shone a rare spotlight on the legal complexities of inheritance in blended families in India — and has set a notable precedent by including cryptocurrency wallets within the scope of a civil asset-freeze order, a first in Indian celebrity estate litigation of this scale.
