India has lost its Ratan. Ratan Tata breathed his last on the night of 9 October. He was not just a person or a businessman but an institution himself. One of the most respected industrialists in India, Ratan Tata had a great love for automobiles. Over the years, he formed a close bond with many cars, either because of personal use, their sentimental significance, or their role in the journey of Tata Motors. Here are some of the cars that were very close to his heart:

Tata Nano

The Tata Nano, launched by Tata Motors in 2008, was designed as the world’s cheapest car, priced at around ₹1 lakh. It aimed to provide a safer, affordable alternative to two-wheelers for Indian families. The small car had a 624 cc engine and basic features but lacked airbags and power steering. Despite early excitement, it struggled due to an image of being “cheap,” safety concerns, and technical problems. Tata Motors tried upgrading the car, but sales dropped, and production ended in 2018. Though not a success, the Nano remains iconic in India’s car history.

Tata Indica

The Tata Indica occupies a special place in Ratan Tata’s heart as it was the first car entirely designed and manufactured by Tata Motors in India. Launched in 1998, it represented a significant milestone for the Indian automobile industry. Ratan Tata’s vision was to develop an affordable, reliable car for the Indian market that could rival global brands. The Indica stood as a symbol of Indian engineering and innovation.

Though it faced early criticism, Indica became successful and helped establish Tata Motors as a key player in the car industry. Ratan Tata was personally involved in the project, believing deeply in India’s potential to build world-class cars. The Indica’s success proved the critics wrong and made Tata Motors a household name.

For Ratan Tata, the Indica represents not just a car but the realization of a dream to make India proud on the global stage.

Tata Safari

The Tata Safari is close to Ratan Tata because it was one of the first Indian SUVs designed and built entirely by Tata Motors. Launched in 1998, the Safari became a symbol of strength, adventure, and Indian engineering. Ratan Tata envisioned an SUV that could handle Indian roads while offering comfort and style. It was a bold step into the SUV market and a proud moment for Tata Motors. The Safari’s rugged design and strong performance made it a hit and it remains a beloved vehicle in India. For Ratan Tata, it represents passion, innovation, and Indian pride.

Jaguar Land Rover

The Jaguar brand is very special to Ratan Tata because it represents one of his biggest achievements in the global automotive industry. In 2008, Tata Motors, under Ratan Tata’s leadership, acquired Jaguar Land Rover (JLR) from Ford. At the time, many doubted that Tata Motors, an Indian company, could manage a luxury brand like Jaguar. However, Ratan Tata believed in the potential of JLR and made it a successful part of Tata Motors.

For Ratan Tata, Jaguar symbolizes overcoming challenges and proving critics wrong. He admired the design, luxury, and performance of Jaguar cars. After the acquisition, the brand flourished under Tata’s ownership, with new models and improved profitability. This success made the Jaguar story even more meaningful to him, as it showed how an Indian company could turn around and grow into a prestigious global brand.

Mercedes-Benz

Ratan Tata’s favorite Mercedes-Benz car is the Mercedes-Benz S-Class. The S-Class is known for its luxury, comfort, and advanced technology, making it one of the best luxury sedans in the world. Ratan Tata loves this car for its smooth ride, quiet cabin, and excellent performance, which align with his appreciation for well-engineered vehicles. The S-Class is also famous for its safety features and high-quality design, which match Tata’s refined taste. It reflects his admiration for elegant yet powerful cars that are a combination of innovation and luxury.

Land Rover Defender

The Land Rover Defender is one of Ratan Tata’s favorite cars because of its rugged design, off-road capability, and strong engineering. Known for its toughness and ability to handle difficult terrains, the Defender aligns with Tata’s love for adventure and well-built vehicles. After Tata Motors acquired Jaguar Land Rover in 2008, the Defender became even more special to him, symbolizing the success of the acquisition. Tata has often been seen driving the Defender himself, enjoying its durability and versatility, which make it perfect for both city roads and tough outdoor conditions.

Ferrari California

The Ferrari California is a stylish, high-performance sports car from Ferrari, known for its sleek design, powerful V8 engine, and convertible top. Launched in 2008, it offers a mix of luxury and speed, with smooth handling and a top speed of over 300 km/h. The car is loved for its blend of performance and comfort, making it ideal for both everyday driving and racing.

The Ferrari California holds a special place in Ratan Tata’s heart because he owns one, and it represents his passion for cars and engineering excellence. He’s often been spotted driving it himself.

Ratan Tata’s collection and affinity for these cars reflect not just his personal tastes but also the evolution of Tata Motors under his leadership and his broader influence in the automotive world. Each vehicle carries emotional and historical significance for him, whether through his personal experiences or the industrial legacy they represent.
