Although the Indian government has never formally considered sending troops to Ukraine, India has a long history of participating in international peacekeeping operations.

Washington/New Delhi: A new book on the second presidency of US President Donald Trump has revealed that a proposal to involve Indian troops in a potential peacekeeping mission in Ukraine was reportedly dismissed by Trump during a high-level White House meeting.

The claim appears in Regime Change: Inside the Imperial Presidency of Donald Trump, authored by journalists Maggie Haberman and Jonathan Swan. The book sheds light on discussions within the Trump administration about possible strategies to end the ongoing Russia-Ukraine conflict.

Proposal Emerged During Ukraine Peace Talks

According to the book, the discussion took place in January 2025, shortly after Donald Trump began his second term as President of the United States. The meeting reportedly included Vice President JD Vance, senior administration officials, and key advisers working on a framework to bring the war in Ukraine to an end.

At the center of the discussion was a proposed peacekeeping force that would help monitor and enforce a ceasefire if an agreement between Russia and Ukraine could be achieved.

JD Vance Suggested India as an Alternative

The book claims that Vice President JD Vance expressed concerns about deploying troops from NATO member countries, arguing that such a move could further escalate tensions with Russia.

Instead, Vance reportedly explored the possibility of involving troops from non-European nations and suggested India as a potential contributor to a peacekeeping mission.

However, Trump is said to have rejected the idea, reportedly remarking that India would be unlikely to participate in such an operation. The former president also referenced his cordial relationship with Prime Minister Narendra Modi during the discussion.

India’s Position on the Ukraine Conflict

India has consistently maintained a neutral and balanced stance on the Russia-Ukraine war. New Delhi has repeatedly called for diplomacy, dialogue, and a peaceful resolution to the conflict rather than military escalation.

Prime Minister Narendra Modi has on several occasions emphasized that modern conflicts cannot be resolved through warfare alone and has urged all parties to pursue negotiations.

India has refrained from taking sides in the conflict while continuing diplomatic engagement with both Russia and Ukraine.

Peacekeeping Experience Gives India Global Credibility

Although the Indian government has never formally considered sending troops to Ukraine, India has a long history of participating in international peacekeeping operations.

Indian armed forces have served in numerous United Nations peacekeeping missions across conflict zones in Africa, the Middle East, and other regions. Over the years, Indian troops have played important roles in maintaining stability and supporting humanitarian efforts in countries affected by conflict.

This extensive experience has earned India recognition as one of the world’s leading contributors to UN peacekeeping missions.

Debate Over Future Peacekeeping Roles

The revelations from the book have reignited discussions about whether countries outside Europe could play a role in future peacekeeping efforts if a ceasefire agreement is eventually reached in Ukraine.

While there is currently no indication that India would participate in such a mission, the report highlights how global powers have explored various options to bring an end to one of the world’s most significant geopolitical conflicts.

As the war continues, diplomatic efforts remain focused on finding a sustainable path toward peace, with major nations seeking solutions that can secure long-term stability in the region.
