The scheme aimed at providing universal access to banking services and basic savings bank accounts with overdraft facilities worth Rs. 10,000/. It also included a Financial Literacy Programme, a Credit Guarantee Fund to banks, Insurance, and Pension scheme for the Unorganized unbanked sector. 

PMJDY proved to be a strong foundation for mass-centric economic initiatives. Now, every single adult has a bank account and can directly receive benefits from direct benefit transfers( DBT), financial assistance post COVID-19, PM-KISAN, increased wages under MGNREGA, or, life and health insurance cover. 

Witnessing a three-fold growth, PMJDY accounts went from 14.72 crore on March 15 to 50.09 crore on Aug 23, which is undoubtedly commendable for the Financial Inclusion Initiative. 

2. Beti Bachao, Beti Padhao: Sukanya Samriddhi Yojna

PM Modi swears by his mantra ‘ Beta Beti, Ek Samaan’. On 22 Jan 2015, he launched the Beti Bachao, Beti Padhao ( BBBP) campaign in Panipat and expressed his dire concerns regarding the imbalance Child Sex Ratio ( CSR) and women empowerment. The Ministry of Women and Child Development ( MoWCD), the Ministry of Health and Family Welfare ( MoHFW), and the Ministry of Education ( MoE) joined hands and made this trip-ministerial effort a resounding success story. 

  • Targeting the backward areas of UP, Punjab, Bihar, Uttarakhand, Delhi, and Haryana, he adopted the Jayapur village in Varanasi. Addressing its citizens, he urged the nation to sow 5 plants when a baby girl is born, a heartfelt move to celebrate the birth of a girl child. 
  • Sukanya Samriddhi Yojna was also launched in 2015 as an integral part of the BBBP campaign. It is one of the best long-term investment plans for a girl child, which allows parents to invest in their daughter’s education and also save for future marriage expenses.  

3. Ayushman Bharat – Pradhan Mantri Jan Arogya Yojana ( PMJAY)

The Ayushman Bharat Yojana, also known as the Pradhan Mantri Jan Arogya Yojana (PMJAY), is one of the most significant Modi policies. It was launched to provide financial protection to families against high medical expenses and ensure that everyone has access to healthcare. 

It was launched in September 2018 as a flagship healthcare scheme. Under this scheme, the beneficiaries receive health insurance coverage of up to ₹5 lakh per family per year, preventive healthcare and routine check-ups, and the facility of hassle-free cashless treatment at empaneled public and private hospitals across India. 

4. PM Garib Kalyan Anna Yojana

To fulfill the most basic of the needs which is food, the Modi government ensured that the poorest of the poor were benefited by the flagship government welfare programs. 25 crore people have been released from the shackles of poverty as about 80 crore people receive free food grains ( ration) under the PM Garib Kalyan Anna Yojana. Another successful praiseworthy Modi guarantee which ensures that no one sleeps on an empty stomach!

5. Make In India

With a vision of ‘Ayushman Bharat’, PM Modi launched the ‘Make In India’ scheme which aimed at harnessing the nation’s Entrepreneurial energy. In his words, we’re a nation of job givers, not job seekers!

The four main pillars of the innovative scheme are a New Mindset, New Infrastructure, New Sectors, and New Processes. 6. Pradhan Mantri Awas Yojna

With a promise of ‘Housing for all’, the Modi government launched the PM Awas Yojana, benefiting millions across urban and rural regions. To date, 4 crore houses have been successfully sanctioned under the scheme. 

The government also fulfilled the promise of Rural Electrification, which is 100% electrification of villages. The Jal Jeevan Mission is also part of the welfare plan which promises Har Ghar Nal. water is now accessible to over 14 crore rural households, ensuring safe and clean tap water for every rural household in India. 

7. Pradhan Mantri Shram Yogi Maan-Dhan Yojna( PM-SYM)

The PM-SYM is a pension scheme in which the investor can contribute voluntarily and is entitled to the following benefits: 

  • Minimum fixed pension: A fixed monthly pension of Rs 3000/- after 60 years of age.
  • Family pension: Upon death of the subscriber, the spouse shall receive 50% of the pension amount.
  • If the subscriber has been a regular contributor and dies before turning 60, the spouse can continue and join by paying regularly to the scheme. 

ATAL PENSION YOJANA ( APY) is also an excellent initiative launched by the Modi Government which has been very successful since its inception. Its main target is to benefit the most neglected section of society such as cleaners, workers, gardeners, etc. 

8. Amrut Plan

The AMRUT PLAN was received with open arms by the target audience- the neglected and poor section of society. It aims to provide basic life services such as clean drinking water, transportation, etc, and focuses on building essential amenities for the common public. 

The Atal Mission for Rejuvenation and Urban Transportation ( AMRUT) ensures:

  • clean water supply in every house, along with sewerage connection;
  • sufficient open spaces and green corners ( parks); 
  • Pollution-free public transport accessible to all. 

9. Pradhan Mantri Krishi Sinchayee Yojana: Per Drop More Crop

With this scheme, the Modi Government has enhanced water utilization efficiency (‘More crop per drop’) through a targeted approach. The Department of Agriculture and Farmers Welfare (DA&FW) is actively implementing the Per Drop More Crop scheme, operational since 2015-16 across the nation. 

This initiative primarily focuses on enhancing water utilization efficiency at the farm level through the adoption of Micro Irrigation techniques such as Drip and Sprinkler Irrigation Systems. The Per Drop More Crop scheme is being executed under the Rashtriya Krishi Vikas Yojana (RKVY) starting from the fiscal year 2022-23. 

For the welfare of the farmers’ community, the Modi government also launched the Pradhan Mantri Kisan Pension Yojna ( PMKPY). This scheme is a promise to pay all needy farmers ( poor and small farmers with 2 acres of land) an annual sum of Rs 6000/-through DBT. This initiative is all set to benefit about 14.5 crore farmers across the country. 

10. Ujjwala

Ujjwala is also a very popular Modi government policy. Also known as Pradhan Mantri Ujjwala Yojana ( PMUY), it was launched by PM Modi in Ballia, Uttar Pradesh on 1st May 2016. with the tagline “Swachh Indhan, Behtar Jeevan.” 

The Ujjwala Yojana is implemented by the Ministry of Petroleum. It’s a social welfare scheme that provides affordable LPG connections to women below the poverty line (BPL). It started with a target to release 8 crore LPG cylinders to the BPL families by March 2020. The scheme was launched to improve the health of women and children by replacing hazardous cooking fuels such as firewood, cow dung, and coal with smoke-free liquefied petroleum gas (LPG). 

The scheme provides financial assistance of ₹1,600 per LPG connection to BPL homes so that the cost of security deposit, pressure regulator, and administrative charges is covered. Not just this, interest-free loans for the purchase of the LPG stove and the initial cost of refills are also covered in the Ujjwala scheme.
