Akshaya Tritiya, or Akha Teej, is a sacred and highly auspicious day in the Hindu and Jain calendars. The term is derived from Sanskrit:
- “Akshaya” means imperishable, eternal, or never diminishing.
- “Tritiya” means third day (gibbous moon).
- The day is related to prosperity, spiritual growth, and new beginnings, and is believed to be free of all negative planetary influences.
When is Akshaya Tritiya Celebrated?
Celebrated on the third lunar day (Tritiya) of Shukla Paksha (waxing moon) in the month of Vaisakha (April-May).
It usually falls in late April or early May. This year, Akshaya Tritiya is celebrated on April 30, 2025.
The Hindu calendar indicates that the Tithi will begin at 05:31 PM on April 29, 2025, and end at 02:12 PM on April 30, 2025.
This day is so auspicious that no muhurat (special timing) is needed to start something new—any time on this day is considered holy.
Religious Significance
In Hinduism:
- Birth of Lord Parashurama (6th incarnation of Vishnu).
- The day Sudama visited Lord Krishna, and was gifted immense wealth.
- Draupadi received the Akshaya Patra from Krishna during the Mahabharata era, which provided unlimited food.
- Beginning of Treta Yuga (the second of four Yugas).
- Kubera (the god of wealth) is believed to have received his wealth and title of treasurer of the gods.
In Jainism:
- Lord Rishabhanatha (Adinath), the first Tirthankara, ended his one-year fast by consuming sugarcane juice on Akshaya Tritiya.
- It is a significant day for charity, fasting, and religious observances in Jain households.
