KOLKATA, Jan 09, 2024, 10:40 PM IST – Ustad Rashid Khan, a prominent figure in the world of Hindustani classical music, succumbed to cancer at the age of 55 in a private Kolkata hospital on Tuesday afternoon, confirmed West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee.
A Musical Journey Cut Short
Born in Badayun, Uttar Pradesh, Ustad Rashid Khan belonged to the Rampur-Sahaswan Gharana, known for its connection to the Gwalior Gharana. This style is characterized by medium-slow tempos, a resonant voice, and intricate rhythmic play.
Early Training and Illness
The maestro received his initial musical training from his maternal grand-uncle, Ustad Nissar Hussain Khan. Unfortunately, his battle with cancer led to his demise at the age of 55. Chief Minister Banerjee expressed her grief, stating, “It is very unfortunate. He died at just 55. It is a great loss for the nation and for all of us. He was like my brother. He used to call me mother.”
Hospitalization and Final Moments
Admitted to a private hospital in east Kolkata on November 22 last year, Ustad Rashid Khan had suffered an intracerebral hemorrhage. Despite a promising recovery, a hospital-acquired infection proved fatal. The renowned musician was put on a ventilator in his final hours and passed away at 3:45 pm.
Awards and Recognitions
Ustad Rashid Khan leaves behind a legacy of honors, having been awarded the prestigious Padma Shri in 2006, the Padma Bhushan in 2022, and the Banga Bibhushan, the highest civilian award in West Bengal. He was also a revered advisory member of various state cultural bodies.
Fondness for West Bengal
Although born in Uttar Pradesh, Ustad Rashid Khan had a deep affection for West Bengal, where he had settled. Chief Minister Banerjee shared, “He was born in Uttar Pradesh but he used to love West Bengal and settled here. He used to call me mother.” The last rites are scheduled for Wednesday afternoon with a gun salute in his honor.
In his departure, the world loses not just a musical icon but a beloved personality whose contributions to the cultural tapestry will be cherished for generations to come.
