In a powerful step towards reclaiming her life and future, the Durgapur medical college student who survived a gang rape outside the campus last year has rejoined her institution. College authorities confirmed that she resumed classes on Monday, calling it a significant moment in her long journey of recovery.
Legal representatives associated with the case said the survivor is determined to start afresh. Special public prosecutor Bivas Chatterjee, defence counsel Shekhar Kundu and the survivor’s lawyer Partha Ghosh stated that she remains hopeful of justice and is focused on rebuilding her academic life. Sources added that enhanced security arrangements have been put in place to ensure her safety on campus.
According to sources, the student has also appeared for her first MBBS professional examinations, which she had missed in October last year due to the trauma following the incident. However, the college administration has not officially confirmed this development.
Earlier, the survivor’s family had expressed a desire to move her back to Odisha, her home state. The medical college, however, encouraged her to continue her studies in Durgapur and assured full institutional support. At the time, the college director had described her as a bright student with strong aspirations of becoming a doctor, reiterating the institute’s commitment to helping her graduate.
During the recording of her statement before a magistrate, the student had clearly indicated her wish to pursue her medical education despite the ordeal.
The investigation into the case moved swiftly, with police arresting five accused from the Bijra area within 48 hours of the crime and later filing an 861-page charge sheet. Last week, the survivor completed cross-examination related to the incident, with her deposition concluding in late January.
Calling her resolve remarkable, special public prosecutor Chatterjee said the survivor has completed all legal formalities required to build a strong case, displaying exceptional courage throughout the process.
