In a recent report, the Canadian Security Intelligence Service has labeled India as a ‘foreign’ interference threat, while also accusing China of attempting to influence its past two federal elections. This latest development comes amidst heightened tensions between Canada, India, and China.

The report highlights the significant and pervasive nature of China’s foreign interference activities, targeting various levels of government and civil society across Canada. According to the intelligence, China employs a wide array of tools, including the United Front Work Department, its diplomatic corps, and non-government assets such as community groups and trusted contacts.

On the issue of India, the report suggests that the problem could escalate, emphasizing the need to safeguard Canada’s democratic institutions and processes. Global News, the outlet that published the October 2022 report, notes that foreign interference differs from traditional diplomacy, employing secrecy and deception to influence public narratives.

In response to the intelligence report, Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau has ordered an investigation into the matter. However, India has not yet issued a formal response to these recent developments.

Tensions between Canada and India escalated last year when Prime Minister Trudeau accused India of involvement in the murder of Khalistan separatist Hardeep Singh Nijjar on Canadian soil. The Ministry of External Affairs (MEA) promptly dismissed Trudeau’s allegations as “baseless, absurd, and motivated.” This exchange further strained diplomatic relations, leading to the expulsion of an Indian diplomat from Ottawa by Canada. In retaliation, India requested Canada to reduce its diplomatic presence in the country.

As the accusations unfold, the geopolitical landscape becomes more complex. Canada finds itself in the delicate position of accusing two of the world’s largest superpowers, India and China, of meddling in its internal affairs. The situation demands careful consideration and diplomatic efforts to ensure stability in the face of these serious allegations.
