Several important financial and administrative changes have come into effect across India from July 1, 2026, impacting millions of citizens. The latest updates affect EPFO members, Aadhaar holders, passport applicants, income taxpayers, and LPG-PNG users. Here’s a detailed look at the key changes that could affect your finances and daily life.

EPFO Online Services Back After System Upgrade

The Employees’ Provident Fund Organisation (EPFO) has restored all its online services after completing a five-day technology upgrade and database migration.

The maintenance exercise, carried out between June 26 and June 30, temporarily suspended access to the EPFO member portal, employer portal, and several digital services.

According to the organisation, the system upgrade is aimed at improving:

  • Faster claim processing
  • Enhanced cybersecurity
  • Better service delivery
  • Improved database efficiency

Subscribers can now access all online EPFO services as usual.

Aadhaar Email Update Now Free Until December

In a major relief for Aadhaar users, updating the email address linked to an Aadhaar card through the official Aadhaar mobile application is now free.

The Unique Identification Authority of India (UIDAI) has waived the update fee from July 1 to December 31, 2026.

Previously, users had to pay a service charge to update their registered email address.

The move is expected to encourage more citizens to keep their Aadhaar details updated for seamless access to government and financial services.

Passport Application Fees Increased

The Ministry of External Affairs (MEA) has revised passport application charges for the first time in over a decade.

Revised Passport Fees

ServicePrevious FeeNew Fee
Standard 36-page Passport₹1,500₹2,500
Tatkaal 36-page Passport₹3,500₹5,000

Fees for:

  • 60-page passports
  • Minor passports
  • Police Clearance Certificates (PCC)
  • Overseas passport services

have also been revised upward.

Applicants planning to apply for a passport should check the updated fee structure before submitting their applications.

Income Tax Return Filing Deadline Nears

The countdown has begun for the Income Tax Return (ITR) filing deadline.

Eligible taxpayers filing ITR-1 and ITR-2 must submit their returns by July 31, 2026, to avoid penalties and interest.

Generally:

  • ITR-1 is meant for salaried individuals with basic income sources.
  • ITR-2 applies to taxpayers with capital gains, multiple house properties, or annual income exceeding ₹50 lakh.

Tax professionals have advised taxpayers not to wait until the last week to complete the filing process.

LPG and PNG Connection Rules

Changes relating to domestic cooking fuel may also affect some consumers.

Individuals who currently use both LPG and Piped Natural Gas (PNG) were earlier advised to shift completely to PNG before June 30.

While the transition is expected to begin from July, authorities have not yet announced any nationwide discontinuation of LPG supplies.

Consumers relocating to areas without PNG connectivity will continue to have the option of reactivating their surrendered LPG connections.

What These Changes Mean for Citizens

The latest regulatory updates are aimed at improving digital governance, streamlining public services, and encouraging better compliance.

While free Aadhaar email updates and restored EPFO services provide convenience for citizens, the increase in passport fees means higher costs for those planning international travel.

Meanwhile, taxpayers should ensure timely filing of income tax returns to avoid penalties as the July 31 deadline approaches.

Key Highlights

  • EPFO online services restored after system migration.
  • Aadhaar email updates made free till December 31, 2026.
  • Passport application fees increased from July 1.
  • Income Tax Return filing deadline remains July 31, 2026.
  • LPG and PNG transition rules begin taking effect.

With several important changes becoming effective from July 1, citizens are advised to stay informed and complete any pending financial or administrative tasks well before the applicable deadlines.
