Tamil cinema woke up to another heartbreaking loss on Saturday, June 27, as veteran actor, director and screenwriter K. Bhagyaraj passed away at the age of 73 after suffering a cardiac arrest in Chennai. According to reports, he was brought unconscious to Apollo Hospitals, where doctors declared him dead on arrival.

His death comes just weeks after the demise of his mentor, the legendary filmmaker Bharathiraja, marking the loss of two towering figures who together reshaped the storytelling traditions of Tamil cinema within a short span.

Bhagyaraj is survived by his wife, actor Poornima Bhagyaraj, his daughter Saranya Bhagyaraj, and his son, actor Shanthanu Bhagyaraj.

A Rare Triple Threat of Tamil Cinema

Born Krishnaswamy Bhagyaraj on January 7, 1953, near Gobichettipalayam in Tamil Nadu’s Erode district, Bhagyaraj began his cinematic journey as an assistant to Bharathiraja before going on to build an identity entirely his own. He was widely regarded as one of the rare filmmakers in Indian cinema who would write the script, compose the music, direct the film and play the lead role — sometimes all in the same project.

This versatility earned him the popular title of the “King of Screenplay,” a reputation built on his sharp, relatable scripts and his gift for turning everyday middle-class life into compelling cinema. His films were known for their wit, social observation and emotional warmth, qualities that made him one of the most consistently bankable storytellers of his generation.

“He didn’t just direct films — he lived inside every frame, often as the writer, composer and actor all at once.”

A Legacy Beyond Tamil Cinema

While Bhagyaraj’s body of work is most closely associated with Tamil cinema, his influence travelled well beyond it. Several of his films were remade in Telugu and Hindi, extending his storytelling reach across the country. He also stepped behind the camera for Hindi audiences directly, helming the 1986 film Aakhree Raasta, which starred Amitabh Bachchan — a rare crossover for a Kollywood filmmaker of his time.

In Telugu cinema, he directed Pellaina Kothalo starring Allari Naresh, and wrote the screenplays for popular films including Intlo Illalu Vantintlo Priyuralu and Abbayigaru, both of which were well received by audiences.

Active Until the End

Even after stepping back from direction in his later years, Bhagyaraj remained a familiar presence on screen as an actor. His most recent screen appearance came in Dhanush-starrer Kuberaa (2025). Notably, earlier this year, during celebrations marking his 50 years in Indian cinema, Bhagyaraj had announced plans to return to direction with a new feature film and a web series — projects that now remain unrealised.

Tributes Pour In

News of his passing sent shockwaves through the Tamil and Telugu film fraternities, with celebrities, political leaders and fans across South India sharing condolences through the day. Many in the industry remembered Bhagyaraj not just for his commercial success but for the distinct cinematic voice he gave to ordinary, middle-class stories that audiences instantly recognised as their own.

K. Bhagyaraj’s passing marks the end of an era for an industry he helped define — one built on family entertainers that balanced humour, heart and social commentary in equal measure. His body of work, spanning more than five decades, continues to be cited as a reference point for screenplay writing in Indian cinema.
