In a significant move to boost green energy infrastructure in Maharashtra, Adani Enterprises Limited, the flagship company of the Adani Group, has inked a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) with the Maharashtra government. The agreement outlines plans to establish a 1 GW hyperscale data centre infrastructure in the state, backed by an investment of Rs 50,000 crore over the next decade.

The MoU signing ceremony took place at the World Economic Forum 2024 in Davos, witnessed by Maharashtra Chief Minister Eknath Shinde and Adani Group Chairman Gautam Adani. The hyperscale data centre is slated to be strategically located in key areas like Mumbai and Pune and will be powered entirely by renewable energy sources.

This ambitious project is expected to not only fortify the technological infrastructure of Maharashtra but also generate significant economic benefits. According to the Adani Group’s official statement, the initiative is anticipated to create direct and indirect employment opportunities for around 20,000 people.

Adani Group further disclosed its intention to make deemed distribution investments to power the proposed hyperscale data centre infrastructure. This indicates a strong commitment towards ensuring sustainable and eco-friendly operations.

“The Maharashtra government is keen on promoting information technology-related infrastructure and services and considers the proposed hyperscale project to be economically and socially beneficial to the state,” stated the press release from the Adani Group.

A notable aspect of this initiative is the focus on utilizing renewable energy to power the data centre infrastructure. Mumbai, already a global frontrunner in renewable energy usage, is set to further increase its green energy share. In 2023, Adani Electricity Mumbai Limited (AEML) supplied up to 38 percent of electricity to Mumbai consumers from renewable sources. The company aims to raise this figure to an impressive 60 percent by 2027.

In summary, this massive investment by the Adani Group signifies a landmark step towards fostering green technology, economic growth, and employment opportunities in Maharashtra. The project aligns with the state’s vision for a sustainable and technology-driven future. As we look ahead, the successful implementation of this hyperscale data centre is poised to make Maharashtra a key player in the digital landscape, setting new benchmarks for environmentally conscious and innovative development.
