Most politicians come from politics. Agnimitra Paul came from the world of fabric, craft, and couture — and brought all of it with her when she crossed over.
In a state long defined by ideological politics and entrenched party dynasties, Paul stands out as something genuinely different: a self-made professional woman who chose public service on her own terms, built a mass base from scratch, and emerged — in just seven years — as one of the most influential figures in Bengal’s changed political landscape.
Full Name Agnimitra Paul (née Roy)
Born 25 November 1974, Asansol
Constituency Asansol Dakshin, WB
Party Bharatiya Janata Party
Current Role MLA + VP, BJP West Bengal
Former Career Fashion Designer (“Inga” label)
Agnimitra Paul was not supposed to be a fashion designer. Keen to become a gynaecologist, she instead studied Botany Honours in Asansol. It was while pursuing a management degree in evening classes at Jadavpur University that she decided to apply to the Birla Institute of Liberal Arts and Management Sciences — just to keep herself occupied in the mornings. A diploma in fashion design followed, and she went on to become one of the most promising designers in Bengal in the late 1990s and early 2000s.
From designing costumes and personal wardrobes for Bollywood stars Sridevi, Mithun Chakraborty and Kay Kay Menon, to designing clothes for films like Koi Mere Dil Se Pooche and Via Darjeeling, Paul built a reputation across Kolkata, Mumbai, and among NRI clientele. She went on to launch her own fashion label, Inga, across multiple cities.
When she showcased her work at Lakme Fashion Week in 2007, she walked the ramp for the final bow with two artisan women who had worked on her collection — a collection that showcased Bengal’s traditional handwork of Kantha. Her designs were always rooted in Bengal’s own craftsmanship.
Global Recognition Paul designed for the Lakme Fashion Week Summer/Resort 2013 and received a letter of appreciation from former US Secretary of State Hillary Clinton, who was presented with shawls and blankets designed by her.
Paul had always harboured an interest in politics and said she would take the plunge when she felt she was ready. Glamorous and an excellent conversationalist, she was a regular on the Page 3 circuit — yet despite being part of the fashion industry, she was never seen doing late nights, preferring to attend an event and get back home to be with her family.
Paul joined the Bharatiya Janata Party on 23 March 2019. Her rise within the party was swift. In 2020, she became the BJP Mahila Morcha president of West Bengal, succeeding Locket Chatterjee. As Mahila Morcha president, she organised self-defence training workshops called “Uma” for women across 23 districts in the state.
In her TED Talk, she had mentioned that having achieved success in fashion, she wanted to give back to society and make women in Bengal’s villages more self-reliant. That philosophy translated directly into action on the ground.

Paul defeated TMC’s Saayoni Ghosh in the 2021 West Bengal Legislative Assembly election from Asansol Dakshin Vidhan Sabha — a contest between two public-facing women that drew enormous attention. She was appointed General Secretary of the BJP West Bengal unit on 22 December 2021.
4,487 Winning margin in 2021 vs Saayoni Ghosh (TMC)
7 Years from joining BJP to VP of WB unit
Branding herself as the “Daughter of the Soil”, she built an emotional bond with the masses that turned Asansol into a fortress for the BJP. In the 2026 West Bengal Assembly elections, she retained her seat from Asansol Dakshin with a significantly enlarged mandate, winning with a margin of over 40,000 votes — a stark jump from 2021, reflecting her deepened roots in the constituency.

Why She Matters
Agnimitra Paul’s significance extends well beyond her individual career. She represents a new kind of political leader entering Indian public life: professionally accomplished before politics, rooted in her home district, and driven by a specific vision for women’s empowerment rather than dynastic obligation or ideological inheritance.
Her rise in just seven years of being part of the party is perhaps the fastest in the BJP’s history in Bengal. From being part of the Mahila Morcha, Paul is now part of the BJP’s inner circle. In a state where politics has historically been the preserve of career politicians and party cadres, her trajectory is genuinely unusual.
Her profile combines visibility, organisational experience, and controversy — making her both a strong candidate and a debated figure. Like all significant political figures, she is a study in contradictions: a Page 3 regular who prefers quiet evenings at home; a fashion designer who champions rural artisans; a firebrand in the assembly who is described by close associates as humble and helpful in private.
Whatever chapter comes next, the story of Agnimitra Paul — from Botany Honours to Lakme Fashion Week to the Bengal Assembly — is already one of the more compelling in contemporary Indian politics.
She once gave new shapes to Bengali fabric.
Now she is helping give a new shape to Bengal itself. O Package for “Agnimitra Paul — From Runway to Assembly”
